Bad Mocks Revival Plan!

Here's a quick guide to show you how to turn your turns poor mock result, into an opportunity!

Key Problems:

  • Bad mock results knock confidence

  • Bad mock results make your teen feel they are miles off the pace

  • Bad mock results pile on the stress and anxiety and that makes revising worse

ree

Key Solutions:

1] Confidence knocked

This is is the frustrating part. They're supposed to see how well they're doing and to see where they need topping up, but the result destroys their confidence!

The Fix: Get them to reframe how they view mocks. Mocks are information getting. They tell you exactly what they can and can't do. Take all the things they can do and praise them like they just won the Nobel prize.

Then take all the things they couldn't do, and get them to revise that. The reframe here is it's all gain. They can only gain marks from here. Easiest entry point is put the topics into YouTube or Maths Genie

2] Feelings far off the pace!

Let's assume the mock is a true representation of how your child is doing. Now they feel off the pace. What can they do?

The Fix: Reframe again. Feeling off it, means they care deeply for their results. Show them examples of things they care about. Gaming, football club, whatever else kids do. And show them that because they care about these things, they put work into getting good at them.

The same applies to Maths. If they play FIFA and their mate beats them every week, they practise and get better. So up the volume and quality of practise (in previous blog here https://www.mrsmythmaths.co.uk/blog

3] Anxiety and stress builds!

There are two types of stress. Good and bad. A type of bad stress is: everything is on top of you, weight of the world on your shoulders, and things aren't going well. It lowers mood and energy and becomes a problem. A type of good stress: Going to the gym stresses muscles, the muscles react by growing stronger to cope with the demands.

The Fix: Again, another reframe. Ask your child how they feel about it. When they tell you "stressed", say this!

Kid: I feel stressed about it!

You: Oh brilliant! This means you really care about this and you're about to face a challenge that will postively change you as a person. This will help you become more stress resistant, more durable and stick to hard things for longer. Remind yourself of why you need it and what you're doing it for. Let's use this stress for good, and let's not view it as bad

(Caveat. You obviously know the difference between extreme stress where they need time away from it)

Just before you go, I would love to invite you to our free Skool community. This is a platform where I keep my Maths essentials course. Here's the link to join us below. When you create an account please use your child's name, your email and please ensure the photo you use for the profile picture is not of your child. Most of our lot take a picture of a pet...or the floor!

(We also have our paid live classes inside the group, you're welcome to join one for free!)
