Volume Negates Luck

A lot of students think success comes from:

  • talent

  • intelligence

  • luck

  • “being naturally good at Maths”

But top performers understand something different.

Very often:

volume beats luck.

Because every skill has a certain number of repetitions needed before it starts feeling natural.

At first:

  • questions feel difficult

  • methods feel confusing

  • mistakes happen constantly

But eventually, after enough repetitions:

the brain adapts.

Patterns become familiar.Confidence rises.Speed improves.Accuracy improves.

And what once felt “lucky”starts becoming:

predictable.


Main Problems

1. Students stop before enough repetitions happen

A lot of students do:

  • 5 questions

  • get frustrated

  • then conclude:

“I’m bad at this.”

But very often,they simply have not done enough repetitions yet.


2. Students massively underestimate required volume

Top performers understand:mastery usually takes:

  • more attempts

  • more reps

  • more mistakes


    than people expect.

Most people quit during the messy middle.


3. Students rely too heavily on luck

Some students secretly hope:

  • the exam goes nicely

  • easy questions appear

  • lucky topics come up

But top performers reduce dependence on luck by increasing preparation volume.

The more exposure you have:

the less random things feel.


Action 1: Understand The “Required Reps” Idea

Imagine I told you:

“This topic sticks forever after 60 questions.”

Would you do the 60?

Probably yes.

Because now:

  • the struggle feels normal

  • mistakes feel expected

  • and progress feels measurable

The problem is:students often quit at question:

  • 8

  • 12

  • or 15

without realising they may have been:

halfway to breakthrough.



Action 2: Stop Judging Yourself Too Early

When learning something difficult,your early performance tells you very little.

At the beginning:

  • confusion is normal

  • slowness is normal

  • mistakes are normal

Top performers expect this phase.

They do not emotionally panic every time they struggle.



Action 3: Increase Your “Luck Surface Area”

Success follows this equation:

Success = Luck × Volume of Effort

Imagine your chance of correctly solving a difficult question is:

1 in 50.

If you only attempt:

  • 2 questions

you rely heavily on luck.

But if you complete:

  • 50 questions

you massively increase the probability of success.

The point is:

volume reduces dependence on luck.

The more repetitions you do:

  • the more patterns you recognise

  • the more confidence you build

  • the less random success feels



Action 4: Become Comfortable With Repetition

A lot of students avoid repetition because:

  • it feels boring

  • repetitive

  • slow

But repetition is often where automatic skill is built.

Top performers understand:the goal is not simply:

understanding once.

The goal is:

remembering permanently.



Action 5: Focus On Inputs More Than Outcomes

Instead of obsessing over:

  • grades

  • marks

  • instant results

track:

  • questions completed

  • hours focused

  • revision sessions

  • repetitions performed

Because strong inputs eventually create strong outcomes.



Action 6: Keep Going Long Enough To See Compounding

A lot of students stop right before progress accelerates.

At first:growth feels invisible.

Then suddenly:

  • confidence appears

  • speed improves

  • questions feel familiar

  • results jump

This is why consistency and volume matter so much.


And yes —before the mathematicians attack me 😊


I know probability does not work exactly like this.

But the principle absolutely does:

the more quality repetitions you perform,

the less your success depends on luck.
