GCSE Maths and the Summer Slide

Most students spend six weeks away from school.

Very few students spend six weeks:

protecting their maths skills.


There's a massive difference.

Research suggests students can lose between 25% and 35% of their learning progress over the summer holidays when learning stops completely.


The students who return strongest in September usually:

  • keep practising

  • review key skills

  • stay consistent

  • avoid long gaps


Not the students who:

  • completely stop studying

  • avoid maths altogether

  • forget the basics

  • try to relearn everything later


Summer isn't about getting ahead.

It's about not falling behind.


Main Problems

1. Most students stop using maths completely

A student can spend:

  • 6 weeks on holiday

  • 42 days away from school

  • hundreds of hours doing other things


but spend almost no time:

  • calculating

  • solving problems

  • working with numbers

  • practising maths


Skills that aren't used become harder to remember.

Maths is no different.


2. Students forget the foundations first

Most students don't forget the hardest topics first.


They forget things like:

  • fractions

  • percentages

  • ratio

  • negative numbers

  • basic algebra


The problem is that GCSE Maths is built on these skills.

When the foundations become weaker:

  • confidence drops

  • mistakes increase

Strong foundations make everything else easier.


3. September becomes harder than it needs to be

Teachers often spend the first few weeks rebuilding knowledge that was already learned.


Instead of moving forwards:

  • students revisit old work

  • confidence takes a hit

Lost learning takes time to rebuild.


Action 1: Study Just 30–60 Minutes Per Week

Most students think they need hours of revision.

They don't.

Try:

  • one short session each week

  • 30–60 minutes total

  • focused practice

  • no distractions

A little consistency beats doing nothing.


Action 2: Focus On The Basics

Summer is not the time to chase Grade 9 questions.

Focus on securing the foundations.

Foundation students should focus on:

  • Grades 1–2

  • number skills

  • fractions

  • percentages

  • simple algebra

Higher students should focus on:

  • Grades 3–4

  • core algebra

  • ratio

  • percentages

  • graphs

Strong foundations create stronger grades later.


Action 3: Use Mixed Practice

Don't spend an hour on one topic.

Mix topics together.

Try:

  • fractions

  • percentages

  • ratio

  • averages

  • algebra

in the same session.

Your brain learns more when it has to switch between skills.

That's closer to what happens in exams.


Action 4: Use GCSE Maths Websites

You don't need expensive resources.

Use:

  • Maths Genie

  • Corbettmaths

  • Dr Frost Maths

  • Sparx Independent Learning

Choose a topic.

Answer a few questions.

Keep your skills active.

Simple works.


Action 5: Keep The Habit Alive

The goal is not to revise all summer.

The goal is not to learn next year's content.

The goal is simply:

  • maintain your skills

  • avoid forgetting key topics

  • return ready to learn

Small efforts repeated weekly make a huge difference.


Final Thought

Enjoy your summer.

Relax.

Spend time with friends.

Take a break.

But don't completely switch maths off for six weeks.

Just 30–60 minutes each week could be the difference between starting September confidently...
